Mi-4 tasarım çalışmaları 1951 yılında başladı ve ilk prototip 1952 Ağustos’unda üretildi. Görünüş olarak Sikorsky S-55’e benzemekle beraber performans olarak onun çok üstündedir ve daha çok S-58’le kıyaslanabilir. 1953’de Sovyet Hava Kuvvetleri’nde hizmete giren Mi-4’ler en çok üretilen Sovyet helikopteri olma özelliğine sahiptir. Lisans altında Çin’de de üretilen Mi-4’lerin üretimine 1964’de son verilmiştir. İlk başlarda teçhizatlı asker taşımak üzere üretilen Mi-4’ler 1600kg’ye kadar yük, GAZ-59 aracı, 76mm tanksavar topu gibi yükleri de taşımaya başlamıştır. Arkasındaki çift kapaklı yükleme rampası ona bu avantajları sağlamıştır. Mi-4’ün, 11 ila 16 yolcu alabilen Mi-4P ve kırsal kesimlerde kullanılan Mi-4S iki tipi geliştirilmiştir. En çok ihraç edilen Sovyet helikopteridir. NATO kod adı “Hound”dur.

The design works for Mi-4 started in 1951 and the first prototype was rolled out on August 1952. Eventhough it looks similar to Sikorsky S-55 it is superior in performance and it can be compared with S-58. They entered service in the Soviet Union in 1953 and they have the particularity of being the most produced Soviet helicopter. They were also under licence produced in the People’s Republic of China. Their production was stopped in 1964. Evnthough they were intended to carry fully equipped troops, later they were modified to carry 1600kg payload, GAZ-59 land vehicle and 76mm anti-tank cannon. The double door rear loading ramp gave him this advantage. There is also the Mi-4P version which can carry 11 to 16 passengers and the Mi-4S version for rural area operations. It is the most exported Soviet helicopter. Its NATO code name is “Hound”.
